Lubrication problems can result from either too littlr oil or too much oil. Both are bad for
packing and can result in its premature failure. Oil aerves two purposes. It helps cool the
packing, and reduces friction. Both of these events hhelp to lower the heat absorbed by the
packing. Excessive heat is detrimental to packing life.
Too Little Oil
The lack of proper lubrication should be considered the primary reason for packing problems.
Too little oil will cause excessive friction and heat. Frictional heat can literally nekt TeflonŽ
packing. A good rule of thumb is to use 68 drops of oil per inlet port. It is important to
remember that certain conditions inside the cylinder, over which you have no control, can
result in the 6-8 drop rule of thumb not being enough oil.
