AAVOLYN COMPRESSOR ENGINEERING BULLETINS

[Item Image] Watch That Lubrication
Engineering Bulletin #26
It may seem to be an excellent rule of thumb that if a small amount of lubrication is good, a
larger amount is better; however, this can lead to problems.

When the amount of oil in the individual packing cups is sufficient to completely surround the
packing rings, it can prevent them from floating with the rod and greatly increase packing ring
wear rates. It may also cause excessive rod wear.

AAVOLYN engineers recommend 4 to 6 drops per minute to the packing case for routine
service. If there are two points, that would be 2 to 3 drops at each point.

Some of the signs of excessive lubrication are as follows.

Higher than normal temperatures in the packing case area.
Discoloration of the packing rings (Bronze rings may have a blueish-purple
discoloration on the face.
Carbon deposits on the rings and in the cup
Tearing of the metal at the bore areas for metal rings.
Impressions of the tangent segments on the downstream side of the radial ring
and marks of the bore of the case on the radial ring (this may also indicate
insufficient side clearance.
This condition is increased dramatically at higher pressures. Many factors go into the
efficient performance of a packing installation. Proper lubrication is one very important one.
