Teflon® vs Laminated Phenolics

New and better materials are continuously being developed to improve product performance in
service and minimize equipment down time.
The family of filled Teflon® have been used in many seal and bearing applications over the
last few years to replace metals and other plastics with excellent success. While they do
not have the tensile and compressive strengths of many of the materials they replace. They
are able to operate well within the normal pressure ranges seen in natural gas service (2000
PSI non lube and 3000 PSI Lube) using back up or anti extrusion rings behind the Teflon®
seals
Teflon's® excellent frictional properties provide many benefits such as less frictional heat and
reduced wear on sealing surfaces. This is especially true compared to laminated phenolics
(bakelite or micarta). The higher temperature limits of filled Teflon® over bakelite are very
beneficial in the newer high speed applications.
Low temp bakelite is good to an operating temperature of 175 F. Above this level it has a
tendency to burn. The hi-temp bakelite materials are able to go to 275 F. Above this level
they delaminate. Teflon® is normally effective up to the 350 F. range.
To obtain the type of performance you should expect from the family of filled Teflon®, the
proper type of Teflon® must be selected. Standard carbon fillers can be disappointing
because they show rapid wear when foreign substances such as liquids or solids are in the
gas. Since most ring suppliers furnish this type of Teflon® with unsatisfactory results it has
hurt the reputation of filled Teflon® as a whole.
AAVOLYN'S AVA47 material combines all of the good properties of Teflon® with the
toughness needed for long piston ring and packing seal life. This has proven out in many
different installations throughout the gas industry.
