AAVOLYN COMPRESSOR ENGINEERING BULLETINS

[Item Image] Packing Ring Installation
Engineering Bulletin #29
Each set of compressor packing rings is designed and manufactured to provide maximum
service life.
PRIOR TO INSTALLATION
*Packing box should be thoroughly cleaned.
*Avoid burring the rings and /or cases during installation.
*Be sure gaskets are not damaged.
*Check groove depths
*Check sealing surfaces (the case is one half of the seal)
*Cups should be ground or lapped.
PACKING RING INSTALLATION OF THE ROD
*1. Hook the packing ring around the rod.
*2. Insert ring segment under spring.
*3. For type 210 (radial/tangent pairs) the radial ring faces the pressure.
*4. Unmarked tangent segments are interchangeable.
*5. Pressure breakers are furnished one to a groove. Installation procedure is the same as
the pressure seal rings. Breaker face grooves are to the pressure.
PACKING CASE INSTALLATION FULLY ASSEMBLED
*The cases can be installed on the rod as a complete assembly by inserting the piston rod
through the packing box. The thread end should be covered with a tapered probe. This
protects the rings during installation.
*Gaskets
*Pull up tight on the stuffing box stud nuts to make
*certain good gasket joints are obtained.
*Force exerted by tightening the stud nuts is transmitted
*to the gasket by the packing case.
*The sealing rings have sufficient clearance in the
*grooves to prevent them from binding.
LUBRICATION
*Packing for gas and air compressors (except those furnished for oilless compressors) are
provided with force fed lubrication connections.
*Metallic packings should be well lubricated while wearing in.
*During normal operation oil feed should not exceed four to six drops per minute.
*Dual feeds in high pressure packings should be in excess of 8 to 10 drops total.
WATER COOLED CASES
*Each water cooled case should be inspected as an assembly before installation in the
compressor.
**1. Insure O-rings have the proper projection, +.010 -.020.
**2. Check for leakage between cups.
**3. Replace O-rings each time the packing case is
** disassembled and reassembled.
**4. Clean internal water passages periodically to
** allow for heat transfer.
Type 220 TANGENT TO THE ROD
*1. The 220 design is installed with slots toward the pressure.
*2. This style of ring requires a backup.
*3. Care must be taken to avoid breaking tips on ring segments at the bore.
PBU TYPE 260
*The radial slotted side is installed toward the pressure with the tangent side away.*
*The PBU is a pressure balanced seal.
*The sealing process may take slightly longer.
*In lubricated applications, normal oil feed rates are used for break-in.
TYPE 215 WEDGE RINGS
*The 215 seal assembly is used after the vent and purge or in the distance piece packing.
*The radial ring faces the pressure.
*Wedge ring have less side clearance than standard ring designs.
INSPECTION AND CARE OF PACKING
Packings should be inspected and cleaned periodically for continued satisfactory
performance.
New Rings will not seal satisfactorily if case grooves are worn. We suggest, if inspection
discloses such wear, the case be returned to us for overhaul when ordering new rings. It is
important that in high pressure gases, cases be lapped before reinstalling to insure proper
sealing. Be careful when removing cases for inspection to avoid damaging the case joints.
Either soak the case in spirits or similar solvent or tap lightly to break joint. When reinstalling
packing, check gasket or gaskets to determine if they are in good condition.
